Qualified bidders are invited to develop plant concepts for projects of unique size (up to 4000 MW electrical output and 800.000 m3 water production per day) which optimally cover the operation of these plants for the entire contract period (up to 25 years).
VTU was engaged by a consortium of bidders headed by SembCorp Utilities Pte Ltd. Of Singapore to support the Fujairah 2 project located in the United Arab Emirates. The targets for this integrated water and power plant (IWPP) were a power output of 2000 MW and a water output of 130 MIGD per day.
Besides the conceptual design optimisation with regard to the production targets and the scheduled operation of the plant, the coordination between the so-called developer (i.e. the consortium that intends to build and operate the plant) and the vendors for the major components, i.e. the power plant (General Electric Company, USA) and the desalination plant (Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, Korea) constituted a focal point of this task.

It is essential for the development of the optimal conceptual design to select a plant configuration and to adjust the design parameters such that maximum synergies are created between the two processes at all expected operating conditions. The complexity of this task requires excellence in both, knowledge of equipment and technologies applied, and experience and know-how in the detailed simulation of power plant processes.
